To perform these changes be sure to use a wired internet connection. Use the following guideline to ensure a secure wireless network.

1. Change the default user-name and password for logging in to your router.

Open up your web browser like Google, Yahoo or MSN whatever you're using, up in the left-hand corner where it says HTTP that is your URL bar, type in 192.168.1.1 and hit enter. Now you'll have to enter the default user-name and password. Now that you're logged into your router you'll want to look for the Administration tab, and then select Management tab, now change the router user-name and router password. Once you've done that you want to save it or click on apply settings tab at the bottom of the page.

2. Disable SSID Broadcasting And Change The Default Name.

This is the name that your wireless network is assigned. The default name is usually the manufactures name of the router following a couple numbers and underscores. Disabling the SSID broadcasting name ensurers added security by not broadcasting your wireless name which is required to know for a wireless connection with your router. Log into your router as mentioned above perform the following: click on the Wireless tab then Basic Settings tab, locate Wireless SSID Broadcasts and disable it, once that is done change your Wireless Network Name (SSID) to whatever you want click save or apply settings for your changes to take effect.

3. Data Encryption WPA2 and WPA2 KEY

Data sent over a wireless connection should always be encrypted on a wireless home network. Not having your data encrypted can be read by others on your wireless network, while performing online banking reading your e-mails etc. There are three types of encryption WEP WPA and WPA 2 being the latest. If your router supports WPA2, which they most do, WPA2 is the encryption to use. Once again log into your router to perform the following steps:

Select the Wireless tab in your router configuration, Wireless Security tab, locate Security Mode and select WPA2 or WPA2 personal depending on the manufacturer of your router and firmware. Locate WPA2 Algorithms, and select the one you want, or AES, which is compatible with Windows XP Service Pack 2 and up, Vista, and Windows 7.

Now you'll want to generate a key which is a long list of numbers and letters that you will have to enter on each wireless device such as a laptop in order to to have a wireless connection. For ease of use, if you have a USB flash drive, save your key into a text document and save it along with your SSID name. Later if you buy a new laptop, or want to allow a friend with their laptop to connect to your wireless, setup will be a breeze when required to enter that information, copy and paste.

4. Enable Mac Address Filtering

Every device that connects to the Internet has a Mac address, it is a unique identifier assigned to all network adapters or network interface cards.

This added security to your router will only allow wireless connections to those devices that are in its MAC address table. Before you enable Mac address filtering your need to locate the MAC address of each wireless device that connects to your wireless network. On windows XP, Vista or Windows 7 click on your start button and click run in windows XP and type cmd, for Vista and Windows 7 type cmd in the rectangle search box, and hit enter, this will bring you to the command prompt a black screen.

Now you want to type ipconfig /all at the command prompt, this will give you all the information for the network adapters, you'll want to scroll down and look for Wireless LAN Adapter Wireless Network Connection, there you will see a Description of the wireless adapter also known as WiFi, look for Physical Address in the format of double digits numbers and letters separated by a hyphen, a combination of six double digits that you need to write down to enter in your Wireless Mac Filter configurations on your router. Now you will want to add a Device MAC Address to your Mac address table to your router. Select the Wireless tab, Mac Filter tab.

Locate Use Filter, enable it, and for Filter Mode select Permit Only Clients Listed to Access the Wireless Network, select Save or Apply Settings tab, now you'll want to select Edit MAC Filter List, from there enter the Mac address that was previously recorded, type it exactly as shown except use colons between your double digit characters, save or apply settings to take effect.

That's it, done.

Aviary Online Design Suite

This week we've been making paper penguins.  Our reasoning isn't quite as tenuous as you would imagine; our company mascot is a penguin, we had an hour to kill, and we needed something to put on the Refresh Cartridges blog.

Of course, you never know where a journey to create a penguin template will take you and while looking for a free vector image editing program, Matt fortunately stumbled across the website www.aviary.com.  Aviary is essentially a free online design suite which consists of many powerful tools ranging from a simple audio editor to a variety of fairly sophisticated image/vector editing software.

The applications are all used online rather than being downloaded and installed on to your hard drive.  This offers a number of advantages, most notably the ability to ‘dip in' quickly and easily, without having to install, and the fact that everything is stored on a central server means you will always be using the most up to date version of the software.

The list of applications currently includes:

Phoenix – A free image editor that handles pretty much anything from basic image retouching to complex effects.  Features include a wide selection of tools, support of layers and 72 helpful tutorials to get you up and running.

Toucan – A colour editor which is ideally used in conjunction with other creations tools in the suite.  Toucan can be used to pick and analyse colour by either colour association rules or by grabbing colours from within existing images.

Peacock – Described by its creators as a ‘visual laboratory', Peacock is used to generate a whole host of effects and image manipulation tools to make some quite stunning and abstract artwork.

Raven – This tool is used for generating vector artwork, which is used by artists to create images that are fully scalable and suitable for applications such as logos and t-shirt designs.  The intricacies of vector artwork are too deep to explain in one sentence but the bottom line is that rather than every pixel of an image being assigned a colour value, a vector image is saved using descriptions of the lines, curves and shapes making up the image.  This means that if the image has to be radically resized the descriptions of those shapes are just changed proportionally resulting in no loss of image quality.  Due to the restrictions of creating drawings using just shapes and lines, vector images are typically quite simple.

Falcon – This utility is used to capture images and web pages quickly and easily in order to crop, resize and ultimately save them for use in another package.  A similar utility ‘Talon' on the site allows you to do the same with an complete computer screenshot.

Myna – Use Myna to edit and remix music tracks and audio clips.  The application can be used to trim, loop, stretch and reverse audio clips along with adding fade ins, fade outs and other effects such as pitch change, delay and reverb.
Each of these tools is free to use and comes with at least one tutorial to help newcomers get to grips with how to use the software and what to use each program for.  Each program is free to use and advertising is nonexistent, however users do have the option for upgrading for just over £15 a year.  By paying for a subscription you are given a number of additional features such as unlimited storage of your creations online, the ability to add personalised watermarks to your creations and access to the advanced premium tutorials and forums.
