Will an inverter interfere with speed control?

I want to attach an inverter to an AC motor and I wonder what happens if I put the speed control before the inverter. Will the inverter flatten out the signal, will it cease functioning if I use a PWM speed control to control power to the inverter? Or should I wire the speed controller after the inverter(between the inverter and the motor)?

An inverter converts low voltage DC to line level AC, so how could you put a speed control in the DC leg? The inverter is designed to operate at a set DC voltage, typically 12 volts, and will not operate properly with a lower voltage.
