If you knew what affects gas mileage, then you will have a better chance of controlling your fuel consumption and minimizing your travel expenses. With the situation concerning fuel prices practically in the red, what you don't know, particularly in relation to gas mileage, will hurt you. To get a better understanding of what affects your fuel efficiency and what you can do to improve it, read on.
1. Car tune-up. An automobile in poor condition guzzles up more fuel than a well-maintained one. If the engine needed tuning up, it could waste as much as 20 percent of the car's fuel. Spark plugs that are in poor condition, malfunctioning fuel systems and problems with emission controls can also affect gas mileage and consequently add to your fuel costs.
2. Tire condition. Tires that are not properly inflated use up more energy to roll, translating to further need for fuel fill-ups. Ask the manufacturer the recommended pressure for your car. Each model and type has its own ideal level of pressure for better rolling resistance.
3. Cooling system maintenance. If the cooling thermostat is constantly in the open position, then the engine will be made to work harder; further subtracting from engine efficiency and gas mileage.
4. Load and cargo. The heavier the vehicle, the more energy needed for its movement and the more gas it would use. Try to minimize the cargo of your automobile. Check the contents and weed out what you don't need. In short, don't try to make your car your closet. Better leave heavy, unnecessary baggage behind.
5. Driving habits. Constant hard breaking, grinding the accelerator pedal and speeding all contribute to increased fuel consumption. Try not to rush and mentally plan your way ahead. Driving over the limit, particularly in highways, decreases gas mileage. Proper driving habits can help save fuel and keep you reasonably safe.
6. Gearing. As much as possible, use the highest gear while in a steady pace. Using the highest gear while cruising on a highway will help improve gas mileage. Automobiles with automatic transmission do provide sterling performance, but this mode will keep you longer in a lower gear, thus effectively decreasing fuel efficiency.
7. Engine idling. If you need to stop and wait before driving again, turn off the engine. Unnecessary idling, or keeping the automobile running without going anywhere, consumes a lot of fuel. Shut down the engine if the wait will last for at least 10 minutes to conserve fuel.
Paying attention to what affects gas mileage can help save fuel and improve efficiency. Care and maintenance of automobile and proper driving habits not only help save gas, they also keep you safe and help your automobile lasts longer.

Save Gas and Money by Organizing Your Fill Ups
The two ways to save money buying gas is to pay less and use less. One of the best ways to use less gas, pay the best price and maximize savings is to plan ahead. Organizing when and where you fill up will go a long way to reduce the amount of gas you use.
Plan ahead to take advantage of other purchases when buying gas. Check out coupons in your local area that offer money off certain items, like convenience food. If you purchase your gas at a service pump that has a convenience store attached then you can use your money-saving coupons for convenience purchases.
Although you are not saving money on your actual gas purchase, just by combining your convenience purchase with your fuel purchase you will find some money saving benefit by shopping and fueling up at the same location. You will be saving on your convenience purchase and you will be conserving gas by not making an extra trip.
You can save money on your gas purchase if you plan when and where to fill up. Don't wait till you are almost empty to fill your car. Plan ahead where and when you are going to purchase gas. Save by trying to fill up once a week at a gas station that you have discovered that sells at a good price.
If you let your tank get too close to empty you may find that you are forced to buy gas at a higher priced station to avoid running out of gas. If you plan your purchase ahead it will allow you to take advantage of the lower priced stations.
Scouting out the best gas prices as you drive can save you plenty. Keep a look out for stations around your house or on roads you travel often and note the prices and locations in a notebook. Soon you will know where the best deals are. You will have created your own local database of prices without using any additional gas to do it.
Sometimes waiting to buy gas can save you money. If on a particular day you cannot find the price you were looking for, wait a day or two and you may still find your price. The price of gas is constantly changing. A few days could make a difference. Again if you plan to fill up well before your tank is close to empty you will have the flexibility to be able to wait till you find the right station with the right price.
A little advance planning can go a long way to help control your gas costs. It may seem like a small thing to do. Just remember all the small things you do to help save gas and money will add up to big savings over time.

Is it bad for my transmission if I shift into a high gear while habing the speed and RPMs low to save gas?
I ask because my friend who was in the passenger seat saw me shift into 4th gear while I was only going 40 kilometers(dont know what it is is in miles, maybe 28 or so?). He made the comment that I'm going to ruin my transmission going to such a high gear with the speed that low. I do this normally just to watch my speed and to save gas, is this bad? Should I indeed shift when the RPMs hit around 3? Thanks in advance for everyones input.
No. The transmission doesn't care. The engine might though. If the RPMs are too low then when accelerating you may need to push the gas pedal harder and 'labour' the engine. The force exerted on the bearings to turn them in the engine is very high at this point and may cause excessive wear on the bearings and use alot of fuel. So as long as you are cruising it is not bad. if you are accelerating whilst in a very high gear then it might be an issue.
