These directions are for amateur builders who have never built a solar car before or those that have partial skill with building mini solar powered vehicles. These plans are only meant to guide new builders for their very first solar powered car.

Be creative and original when you create your solar powered car. Everyone involved in the creation of the vehicle should sketch up some ideas of the looks and functionality of the solar vehicle. Of the drawings you must also consider the efficiency of the design. It's unwise to have a heavy solar powered car. Your first car will be here are very simple, yet cost effective and very well made.

You must think about design of the solar car. Here are a few items of interest to go along with the design you come up with:

• Cost: You don't need to spend a fortune.
• Weight: Heavy solar vehicles will reduce speed and distance so keep your solar car light.
• Materials: If you can't find the exact material needed you can always improvise.
• Durability: Will your final products start to crumble under the pressure of distance and velocity?
• The track or runway: You don't need a track but you should consider using a smooth surface to run your vehicle on.

SOLAR PANELS

For your first try with you solar vehicle it's recommended to use two panels of solar cells. Each panel will consist of two cells. The panels will have leads through the ends of the panels for a direct circuit connection. The solar cells are extremely fragile so be sure to handle them with caution and care. It can be expensive to replace solar panels because of neglect of the material.

Do not cut the backing of the solar panels. If you do you can crack the cells and this will reduce efficiency of the panel. You want to squeeze every bit of energy from your panels so don't cut the backing.   The solar cells can be tested and is recommended that each cell have 0.5V

 HOBBY MOTOR

A standard DC hobby motor can be used to mount to the frame of your solar car. You can usually get a motor from a RC hoppy shop for around twenty bucks. The motors should be rated to 1.5-3 V

CONSTRUCTING THE SOLAR CAR

Think of the materials you would like to use for your first solar powered car. Remember you need to use lightweight materials.

1. Use recyclable material to construct your solar powered car. The lighter the frame and materials the better your car will utilize solar energy.
2. After creating the framework for your solar vehicle you can mount the solar panels in a direction to maximize energy. This means you should have your panels directly face the sun.
3. Next, connect the panels from the circuit leads to the hobby motor. 26 gauge wire will work just fine.
4. Here's the tricky part. Connecting the motor to the wheels on your solar vehicle. Your pulleys must be installed exactly the same distance of each other or your car will veer left or right. Make sure that the pulleys are also lined up correctly. Precise installation of the pulley system will create the right amount of tension for the elastics or fishing line. If you have gears installed, you must consider the gear ratio, corresponding to the motor so you don't strip the internal gears of the motor. A smaller pulley/gear on the motor and a larger pulley/gear on the axle will give you the most performance durability. 

Mounting the wheels can be a daunting task. The wheels should be lubed up with graphite or WD-40. The wheels on your solar powered car should be squared up and not unevenly installed. The goal of mounting your wheels is to minimize wobble. 

Installing the solar panels to the car must be done with finesse. You do not want to crack or chip the panels. The solar panels must be tightly attached to the car so that they do not fall off during your first run. Don't forget to mount the solar panels horizontally facing the sun for maximum efficiency.

2008 Dodge Magnum Continues Current Features, Adds Latest Tech

For 2008, Dodge made its Magnum with somewhat the same features as the current model but with added technologies and improved appearance.

The SRT8

The 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 now has more striking hood with a hood scoop, a new grille and front fascia, and a new interior. The 5-second range performs o-60 mph. For more brake cooling, the new car has the black honeycomb insert of the crosshair grille and air inlet of the front fascia. By reducing lift, the front fascia yields aerodynamic returns. The new car rides on 20-inch aluminum SRT-designed wheels with 245/45/ZR20 (front) and 255/45/ZR20 (back) F1 Goodyear tires.

The new car has Bright Silver Metallic, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl Coat, Steel Blue Metallic Clear Coat and Tor Red as options for exterior colors.

Going inside, this new Dodge car comes with agate-color accent stitching, carbon-fiber leather-trim door handles, and LED lighting in the cup holders and door-map pockets.

The features that are found in the current model and are also in the 2008 models are the power-adjustable, highly bolstered sport seats with performance suede inserts in the front, an improved grip-enhancing carbon-fiber leather-trim steering wheel, and full-performance instruments like a 180-mph (300-kph) speedometer, a tachometer and a temperature gauge.

The 2008 Dodge Magnum SRT8 uses a 425-horsepower 6.1-liter HEMI V-8 engine. This transcends 425-horsepower (317-kW) and 420 lb.-ft. (569 N•m) of torque.

A Re-Configurable Display (RCD) in the cluster will deliver instant feedback to the driver about their personal performance numbers. Through a five-speed automatic transmission, the power for the SRT 6.1-liter HEMI is sent. The transmission has specifically calibrated, driver-selectable Auto Stick that offers fully automatic or manual shifting selection.

As to car’s suspension and body, it has SRT-tuned dampers, tailored spring rates and suspension bushings, and large-diameter anti-sway bars to ensure all around driving performance.

The new Magnum SRT8 is one-half inch lower than the Dodge Magnum R/T, SXT and SE models as to the ride height. This is what gives the latest model further stability and aerodynamic returns. Also, this car has refined performance-handling characteristics; and that is because of the customized Electronic Stability Program (ESP).

The R/T, SXT and SE

The 2008 Dodge Magnum R/T, SXT and SE come with a new front exterior design and a brighter, more up lifted appearance and ambience to the interior. The framework in the front has been lowered and stretched horizontally to reflect a more hostile image. Also added are chrome elements to the front fascia and grille as well as marginal details all over the fog lamps.

The Magnum R/T has Xenon high intensity discharge (HID) elements in the headlamps as an option. Further options include chrome-clad aluminum wheels and 245/45R20 all-season performance tires. Eloquent accent lines from the leading edge going to the windshield can witnessed on the hood. Buyers can choose between Light Pebble Beige and Titanium as the new exterior paint colors.

The 2008 R/T, SXT and SE Magnums have faced lifted interior. This can be felt in the smooth surfaces on the arm rests and top of center console, and can be seen in a new cruise control stalk and optional LED lighting that lights up the cup holders and door-map pockets.

The inside cabin of the R/T and SXT models are more emphasized by the chromes.

Dodge engineers has improved the models’ instrument panel to have a more driver oriented framework.

The 2008 Dodge Magnum R/T’s engine is a new 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 that has MDS. This accurately alters between four-cylinder mode when less power is needed and V-8 mode when more power is needed. This, in effect, increases fuel economy up to 20 percent without compromising performance of the vehicle. As compared to the new hybrid-electric system used by GM, BMW, and Chrysler, the Dodge Magnum R/T’s engine yields better returns. Standard on the 2008 Dodge Magnum R/T, SXT and SE models is the rear-wheel-drive. Their advanced technologies are the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with Brake Assist, all-speed Traction Control System and four-wheel Anti-lock Brakes (ABS). All these blends to enable the rear-wheel drive Dodge Magnum to perform well regardless of the season.

These models are also available with all-wheel drive. An all-wheel-drive system augments a front differential and transfer case for excellent traction. This also provides the best cornering balance under all driving conditions as well as better traction on snowy roads.

The 2008 Dodge Magnum Safety Equipments and other Gadgets

The 2008 Dodge Magnum safety features include the myriad crash protection system, ESP and Brake Assist, all-speed traction control and ABS, advanced restraint systems and low risk deployment air bags, crumple zones, energy absorbing steering column, interior head-impact protection, front and rear side-curtain and front seat-mounted air bags.

Two of the new vehicle’s world class gadgets are the U-Connect Hands-free Communication System that uses Bluetooth technology with iPod interface and the SIRIUS Satellite Radio with streaming video option, Full-map DVD-based Navigation System that uses Global Positioning System (GPS).

The Production

The manufacturing of the 2008 Dodge Magnum begins late summer this year. The car will hit dealerships before the year ends.
