Choose the mountains, prairies, forests, ocean or canyons. America's west has them all. Road trips are for everyone--from families with young children to Baby Boomers beginning their retirement years. It is one of the most rewarding and cost effective ways to vacation and see America. You can book airline tickets and accommodations online. Planning consists mainly of where to eat and sleep near the attractions you want to see and enjoy.

1. California's Redwood Forests

Begin driving north from San Francisco to Crescent City, about a 400 mile drive that takes you through the redwood forests along California's northern coastline. After crossing Golden Gate Bridge on California Route 1, plan a half-day visit to Port Reyes National Seashore. Sonoma Coast State Beach offers lots of relaxing time near the water. Fort Ross State Historic Park is a rebuilt fort from 1812 and the town of Mendocino is full of art and Victorian buildings. Head for redwood country on US 101 and Humboldt Redwoods State Park where you will find the Avenue of Giants. Don't miss Redwood National Park and look for some great hikes off the beaten trail.

2. Colorado Mountain High

If you are looking for fourteeners (mountains over 14,000 feet tall), look no further than the San Juan Mountains in west and southwest Colorado. Between Montrose and Gunnison, you must see the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and the deep, narrow gorge that cuts through it. Take a riverboat tour or visit the Ute Indian Museum. Drive south from Montrose to Ridgeway and then on to Ouray and Telluride for some spectacular scenery. Traveling further south, you may want to ride the narrow gauge railroad from Durango to Silverton and back, a breathtaking ride on the sides of steep mountain passes.

3. Oregon Coast with the Most

Cresting http://i.ezinearticles.com/article-management/ezinearticles/ea_editor_manager.php#pv

EzineArticles.com Editors Interfacewaves strike up against Oregon's rugged coast with magnificent ocean views--you may even see migrating whales at the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area. From Portland, take US 30 northwest toward Astoria, following the Columbia River. A visit is in order at the Columbia River Maritime Museum then head south on Hwy 101 to Fort Clatsop National Memorial where Lewis and Clark spent a tough winter in 1805-06. You will want to see crashing waves up close in Devil's Churn at Cape Perpetua and the huge sand dunes at Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area.

4. Pioneer Trails of Nebraska

Nebraska is famous for its wide open spaces and its green rolling hills and valleys where the pioneer spirit still lives. On I-80 you will find the Homestead National Monument of America in Beatrice which tells the story of early pioneer hardships. The deep ruts of wagon trains gone by are still visible at Rock Creek Station State Historical Park. Fort Kearny State Historical Park features sod houses and how they were built. Continue west to Ogallala and Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area for boating, fishing and swimming. Get your exercise by climbing to the top of Oregon Trail Museum near Scottsbluff.

5. Canyon Country Kaleidoscope

You are in Utah and heading for your first stop--Zion National Park taking I-15 and Route 9. Here you will find steep, red sandstone walls, hidden canyons and wonderful hiking trails. Follow Utah Route 9 to Bryce Canyon National Park, known for its towers of rock called hoodoos. Then on to Route 12 along the northern edge of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument and see magnificent canyonlands, petrified logs, and isolated waterfalls. Capital Reef National Park offers more outstanding rock formations and steep canyon walls.

2011 Toyota Dodge Durango – New and Improved

The New 2011 Dodge Durango

After being off the market for a year, the Dodge Durango re-emerges with a new body and a new style of driving that makes it competitive against other crossover SUVs.  The new 2011 Dodge Durango now has a car-like single unit platform, which is much different from the tuck-like body-on-frame SUV structure of former models. The Dodge Durango's new body gives it a quieter, more balanced ride and better handling dynamics.  There have also been upgrades to the interior with higher quality and more luxurious materials replacing lower quality plastics.

Improvements to the Dodge Durango have also been made under the hood. The 2011 Durango has a smoother and more powerful 3.6–liter V6 engine that cranks out 290 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of Torque, a noticeable increase of 80 horsepower over the earlier 3.7-liter V6 engine.  Some of 2011 Durango models come with an optional 5.7 Liter V8 engine, which offers 360 horsepower and 390 pounds-feet of torque.  You can buy a used Durango engine with anywhere from a 3.7 liter to a 5.9 liter engine.

2011 Dodge Durango Options

The 2011 Dodge Durango comes in a variety of five different models namely, the Express, the Heat, the Crew, the R/T and the Citadel.

The Express and the Heat come with the 3.6L V6 flex-fuel engine, automatic transmission, up to 16 city/23 highway mpg, all-wheel drive, MP3 Player, satellite radio, side/curtain airbags, stability control, traction control and bluetooth.  The difference between the Express and the Heat is that the bluetooth comes as a fixed feature in the Heat and as an optional feature in the Express; however the Express comes with third row seats, while the Heat does not.

The Crew encompasses all the features of the Express and Heat, with the third row seats and bluetooth both coming standard.  The Crew comes with the other options of either a V6 or V8 engines, and a navigation system.

The R/T offers the best performance and the Citadel offers the best trim features of all the models. Both come standard with all the basic features of the other three models plus some added benefits.  The R/T and the Citadel both come with a DVD player as an optional feature.  The navigation system is available to both models, but comes standard in the Citadel and optional in the R/T.  In both the Citadel and the R/T, the 5.7L V8 engine is available - in the R/T it comes standard, while in the Citadel the lower grade3.6L V6 is also available.  The R/T offers the best fuel economy of all the models with up to 14 city/20 highway mpg.

Back in the Game

Despite its slightly smaller cargo room and less powerful V6 engine compared to its competitors, the 2011 Dodge Durango is definitely back in the game.  With its new stylish interior, sophisticated ride, easy maneuverability, adult-friendly third-row seats, powerful optional V8 engine and generous towing capacity, the 2011 Dodge Durango is a worthy contender among cross-over SUVs.

$700 to replace a 2nd gear band on Dodge Durango?

Does $700 sound too high to replace a 2nd gear band (for transmission) on a 99 Dodge Durango? Mechanic said they need to pull out (rebuilt Transmission on 12/04) to replace this part.
They aren't rebuilding transmission, just replacing a broken 2nd gear band.
as I accelerate from a stop - it has problems between 20-30 miles.... the RPM's go up real high- doesn't accelerate... kind of just "skips" out of that gear and then is fine after 30 miles over...

thats too cheap, if you go into the trans of this vehicle it is quite exspensive. just so you know this transmission remanufactured, my cost is almost $1300.00 (wholesale shop price). sounds fishy. is it a special deal because they rebuilt it already? are they really rebuilding it or are they just gonna patch it up every few years? good luck. don't shop this type of work for best price.

Cycling lane upgrades to hit Durango
With the ice now melted from the city's streets, local cyclists should look for a rush of improvements in May, such as 5-foot-wide bike lanes down both sides of 32nd Street and 20 “share-the-road" markings along Roosa Avenue.
