Cruise Control For A Smoother And Comfortable Ride
Australia is regarded as ‘cruise control country’ with its long stretches of roads, highways and freeways. A cruise control feature is definitely an invaluable item in any vehicle. It enables you to maintain a steady speed, enhances driving comfort, reduces fatigue, minimizes the chance of getting lost points from unintended speeding, and even increases your gas mileage by preventing erratic speed. More importantly, it allows you to concentrate on the road and not on your speedometer, thereby reducing the risk of road accidents.
The first cruise control systems were engineered on relatively old technology and relied on centrifugal governors. They were first put to use in the early 1900s by luxury automakers. Centrifugal governors were actually used to control the speed of steam engines but were later advertised as capable of maintaining speed whether uphill or down. The governor controls the position of the throttle as the speed of the engine changes with varying loads. Modern speed governors, also called speedostat, were introduced in the mid-1940s. They differ in the method they monitor ground speed - some calculated it based on drive shaft rotations or the engine's RPM, while the more advanced systems use a wheel speed sensor – but the end result is the steady maintenance of the car's speed.
You don’t have to be a luxury car owner to experience the benefits of having a cruise control system installed in your ride. In fact, trucks and vans as well as cars with manual or automatic transmissions can be equipped with cruise control. The system actually has other features aside from simply controlling the speed of your car. For instance, there are cruise control systems that will allow you to accelerate or decelerate your car by 1 mph with the touch of a button. Tap the button three times to go 3 mph faster. Cruise controls also provide a couple of safety features – it will disengage when you step on the brake pedal, and the system won't activate below a predetermined speed.
Cruise controls normally come in three options: electric, drive by wire and vacuum. Electric cruise controls are the common choice among Australian motorists as they suit more vehicles particularly those with engines that have limited vacuum. It is generally recommended for larger and turbocharged vehicles where a lot of actuator movement is needed. Drive by wire cruise controls are growing in popularity as cars become more advanced and sophisticated. Automakers now prefer the drive by wire option instead of the traditional accelerator cable. The cruise control interacts directly with your vehicle’s engine management system for acceleration/deceleration. The third type and the most economical are vacuum cruise controls as they no longer need an electric motor to operate acceleration/deceleration. But this system can only be installed in passenger cars including station wagons.
Bottom line: cruise control is a great way to relax when driving. Use it properly and your road trips will be more enjoyable. Just make sure that you go to a reputable dealer or auto shop when having the system installed in your ride.

How would you use vacuum bags on a cruise?
If you bring vacuum bags on a cruise how would you suck the air out of them again? I have been on 2 Carnival cruises in the past 2 years and they do not have vacuums in the cabins. So I was wondering how you would suck the air out of them, when you pack up. If I go on another cruise I would think about using them. (;
Just ask your cabin attendant for help when you have the bags packed and are ready for the vacuum. They are pleased to help and a bit of an extra tip would be in order but not necessary. Try to have the bags ready for the vacuum as early on the last day before entering the last port as you can.
