The number of golf GPS devices and the number of apps for smartphones is growing quickly. It is very difficult to keep track as developers try to carve out their niche in the market. As a golfer who is looking for one of these devices, you can be overwhelmed by the number of choices available to you.
First, should you buy a standalone unit like a SkyCaddie or a Callaway uPro, or should you go with a much cheaper golf GPS application that you can download for your smartphone? Now, surely there is no way that a $10 app for the iPhone can match all the features of a SkyCaddie, anymore than a Ford Fiesta can match all the features of a BMW. But people do drive around in inexpensive compact cars and they do get everywhere they need to go (without the luxury of course).
So, if you want a golf GPS device that costs less than a round of golf, but one that can still get you safely around the course, you might consider a smartphone app rather than a much more expensive standalone device. Here are some of the pros and cons of using a smartphone app.
Pros
The price. There is really no comparison here. If you already own a smartphone, then the cost of a good GPS app can be less than one tenth of the cost of a standalone unit.
Free trial. You can download many of these apps for free and try them out with no obligation to buy. This is a relatively hassle-free way of testing the waters to see what the various apps have to offer.
Touchscreen. Many phones like the iPhone or the BlackBerry Storm have touchscreens. Smartphone golf apps often display an aerial view of the course and the golfer can pinpoint any spot on the course to get instant feedback. This is a feature that some of the more expensive models lack. SkyCaddie, GolfLogix, and Sureshot, for instance, do not have touchscreens and do not have a view of the fairway at all.
No subscription or annual fees. With most golf GPS apps, you can usually download all the courses you need or you can use software to map your own courses for free. For some of the top brands subscriptions and annual fees alone can cost much more than a smartphone app.
Cons
Accuracy of GPS. There is debate about whether or not the GPS chip in smartphones is accurate enough for golf. The iPhone claims its GPS is accurate to within 1-7 yards. But the maximum error of 7 yards is still a long way from the 1-3 yards of SkyCaddie or the sub-meter accuracy of Sureshot.
Accuracy and number of mapped courses. You may have to settle for fewer available course maps. Generally with phone apps you will not get professionally mapped courses: there are no armies of mappers (ala SkyCaddie) walking courses to mark all the key spots with pinpoint precision. More likely you will have to settle for self-mapped courses or courses mapped by your fellow software users (mostly from Google Earth). How accurate these maps are is debatable.
Battery life. Golf GPS apps can be a huge drain on cellphone batteries. You may find yourself just barely able to finish a round with a fully charged battery. The standalone devices, on the other hand, have batteries that can last for several rounds of golf.
There may be no clear decision to make here: it will probably come down to personal choice (and economics).
Philip Hoskins is a golf enthusiast who has a keen interest in technological gadgets (like golf GPS devices ) that can improve his golf game. You can find out more about the various golf GPS rangefinders on the market by visiting his website at http://www.gpsgolfware.com.
Performance Chips
In this article I will tell you about different products that use the common name "performance chips". I will be focusing mostly on power chips and supercharger chips due to their wide usage.
The name "power chip" pretty much speaks for itself – it is boosting the power of the vehicle or more precisely – this is a device that is calibrating the engine using some software. It is made to optimize the efficiency of your engine. Its original idea was to be used in car racing but today it is available for many car models and customers all over the world are using these devices to take the most of their engines.
When installed to your engine system the power chip will get data from the electronic control unit of your vehicle (ECU). This data will be analyzed by the chip software and special settings will be applied to your engine. This simple idea made possible for quick decisions to be taken by the software of the power chip. The final result is optimal settings of the engine for all situations made as you drive without a need for your interference in this process. All you need to do is setup the chip and drive.
One nice example of a power chip is the "Jet import ECU upgrade kit" available for BMW 650i. The good thing about this specific unit is that it applies settings for the full power band and not just for full throttle. This is very important because if you get some graphs on your driving you will see that the full throttle is usually not the biggest part of your driving experience. Your car needs different settings for the whole range of usage – from the moment you power the engine to the moment you stop it.
The superchargers are the other aspect of the performance chips I would like to cover. The supercharger is a system that provides forced induction to the engine using an air compressor. Generally there are two types of supercharger systems: positive-displacement and dynamic compressors. The main difference between them is that the positive-displacement system provides almost a constant boost regardless of the RPM (the current speed of the engine). On the other hand – the dynamic compressor will measure the RPM and with the increasing of the RPM the boost will also increase.
There is also another term that is commonly used and it’s called "turbochargers". The difference is that the turbochargers are driven by the exhaust gases and more precisely – the pressure that they provide. In some cases turbochargers are more efficient than the superchargers but this differs in the different situations.
You can find a lot of data regarding many supercharger units on the web and the markets and I will not give examples or try to cover all of them. However I would like to say a few words about some of the terms that you may need to know.
The first one is the boost. Boost is the amount of pressure that is provided by the supercharger. The values you will see are usually in psi (pounds per square inch).
You will also see a lot of abbreviations in the specifications you will read. Things like PD1, VT1, VT2, TS, etc. PD stays for Powerdyne. It is non-intercooled and also – not in production any more. VT means Vortech and it’s also a non-intercooled system. TS stays for Lysholm TwinScrew systems. TS2 is with Laminova liquid inter-cooling and TS3 is with Laminova liquid inter-cooling too but it also has upgraded engine internals.
With all these abbreviations and specifications it’s sometimes hard to find your way to the system you need but if you do you won’t regret spending all the money on it.

does adding a new cold air intake system and adding a new computer chip to my bmw 318i really give me a?
noticeable change in performance? And is it true that my top speed will increase? Right now, stock, my car will do about 140... What are some other things I can do to my ride to put some pep into its step? Im not in to exaust systems though; I dont want my car to sound like a souped up sewing machine!! I do know that the cold air intake system will give it a bit more of a throaty sound, which I like, but what sounds better a metal intake pipe or a plastic one? thanks
dude, you drive a beemer. you go 140 already. chill out.
an air intake isn't going to do anything for you. at least by itself. if you want to put one on there anyways, get an AEM cai. they're the best out there. also, exhaust systems sound different for every car.
but since you have a beemer, you probably have enough money for whatever i suggest. why not go for a complete engine rebuild? if you really want a noticeable improvement, you're going to need a bit more than a cai and exhaust. especially in a beemer.
