DTV Conversion I have Cable But...............?
So everyone says if you have cable or satalite you'll be ok when the digital conversion happens come Feb. 09.Well I have cable but no box.Just cable straight out of the wall. Will my analog TV's still work this way??
The only guarantee for cable TV subscribers such as yourself is the (non-duplicate) LOCAL “MUST-CARRY” broadcast TV stations mandated by the FCC. Any programming that you will receive in an analog format post February 17, 2009 will be entirely up to your cable TV provider. You should also be aware that cable TV providers are required by law to maintain an up-to-date list of their must-carry stations; so if you’re interested you can always request a copy.
If your cable TV provider has a large number of analog subscribers with analog TVs then it will be more likely that they will continue to provide a greater quantity of their channel lineup in an analog format until the majority of their analog subscribers can be upgraded with digital hardware. Conversely, if your cable TV provider has an overwhelming majority of digital subscribers then your provider will have far less incentive to supply “dual-carriage” content. (Dual-carriage is the process of supplying a channel in both analog and digital formats.)
To put it simply, when it comes to hybrid analog-digital cable providers, only each individual provider will know with any certainty what “dual-carriage” content they will provide after February 17, 2009.
Your options are: trust the comments and media sources claiming you needn’t do anything and simply wait until February 18, 2009 to see if those sources were correct or not. Keep in mind that if they’re wrong then you may find yourself scrambling for an addressable converter box from your cable TV operator in order to continue receiving your favorite channels (providing there isn’t a shortage due to overwhelming demand because everyone else thought they would be unaffected.) Or you can play it safe and lease an addressable converter box in advance from your cable TV provider or begin replacing your analog TVs with new digital TVs. (Note: if you choose to purchase a new digital television and you purchase a model equipped with CableCARD technology in order to receive encrypted cable TV content without the need of an addressable converter box you should make certain that your cable TV provider fully supports CableCARD technology.) Of course if you have more than one analog TV in your home leasing multiple converter boxes can begin to get a little costly. You may have other options as well such as switching to direct broadcast satellite, over-the-air reception, or IPTV through your local telco or wireless provider.
Again, only each individual provider will know with any certainty what “dual-carriage” content they will provide after February 17, 2009. If you haven’t received notification from your cable TV provider by the October/November time-frame detailing specific information on how the DTV transition will affect you then I recommend that you contact your cable TV provider before the end of the year.
