GM's Buick division is seeing new life. Thanks to the discontinuation or sale of four other GM brands-Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, and Hummer-car buyers are taking a closer look at Buick and, for the most part, are liking what they see.

That's not hard to fathom as the brand's Enclave crossover remains popular while its all new LaCrosse sedan is attractive and difficult for dealers to keep in stock. The Lucerne isn't much to write home about, but it does offer consumers what they may want in a full size sedan: plenty of room. And with the all new Buick Regal hitting showrooms this year, Buick has one more model to offer car shoppers.

Buick Line

But the Buick line is still much too thin especially when comparing what its currently sells to what its competitors offer. Lexus offers more than a dozen product lines while Toyota has nineteen models to choose from. Buick is targeting the lower end of Lexus and upper end of the Toyota lines, therefore it has its work cut out for it.

Until recently, a shopper visting a Buick-Pontiac-GMC dealership would find more than enough cars, crossovers, trucks and sport utility vehicles to choose from. With the demise of Pontiac, Buick has to fill that gap, but they aren't. With fewer models to choose from, some customers are heading off to Chevrolet while others are going to Pontiac's competing brands including Ford, Hyundai, Toyota, Nissan and Honda.

That's bad news-once customers leave the fold, they may never return. Though GM sales are on the rise, they could and should rise faster. That is where Buick can step in.

Compact Crossover

Buick had floated the idea of selling a crossover model based on the platform powering the Chevrolet Cruze, but when pictures of a proposed vehicle were floated in 2009, the car was lambasted by the automotive press. Quickly, GM dispensed of the notion of a small Cruze based crossover for Buick, but they haven't entirely abandoned the idea of bringing on some smaller cars.

What we do know is this: Buick will get at least three new models over the next two or three years in a bid to overhaul its line. Expect that the Lucerne will be dropped, making the LaCrosse the largest sedan sold by Buick. The Enclave and Regal will continue, but look for any combination of the following vehicles to be sold by Buick: a small crossover, a compact sedan, a coupe and perhaps one or two dedicated electric or hybrid models.

Yes, whereas Cadillac won't build the Converj, Buick may get that Voltec model. And, where Chevrolet has dropped the crossover Orlando, an even smaller Buick crossover just may be in the mix. GM is mulling what the automaker should offer across all four of its brands, with Buick being one mystery the automaker must quickly resolve.
