It used a petrol or a diesel engine and with a capacity of 1.2L. It had a manual gearbox and a semi-automatic gearbox. There were many speculations about its appearance being more German. It also seemed to be too heavy for its size. There were critics pointing out that its predecessors were better than it. The engine with a capacity of just 1.2L was considered to be underpowered for the size and weight of the car. Because of the above reason the fuel economy fell short.

Fiat Marea was introduced in the global market in the year 1997 and had similar features as that of other cars. The car was introduced at a time when similar cars from other automakers were also being introduced. This was a major reason for the downfall and failure of Fiat Marea.
